Welcome to AVID for the school year of 2017-2018!

AVID Update

This year we will have 111  students in our AVID elective classes from 9th through 12th grade.  We welcome the freshman to our AVID family, and we are excited to work with the sophomores, juniors, and seniors for another school year.  As an AVID elective team we are proud about all of the accomplishments we have seen in the past, and we cannot wait to see what our current AVID students achieve this year.  

The staff at South will be focusing on continuing to bring AVID strategies school wide.  This will help all students to learn the skills that they need to be college and career ready.  Our AVID students will be great role models for the rest of the Blackshirt community.

AVID Elective Update

9th Grade

This month our 9th graders will be focusing in on team building activities, setting up their binders, learning the Cornell Way (a focused note taking system), and learning about the ways of AVID.  9th grades will also be meeting with their senior

10th Grade

The sophomores will be reviewing the steps of the tutorial process as well as working on creating focused to notes to help them learn and retain material from all of their classes.  We will begin tutorials at the end of the month where students will be responsible to have a TRF completed for class every Monday and Wednesday.  

11th Grade

The juniors will also be starting tutorials at the end of the month while they continue to work on keeping an organized binder, a filling in an agenda, and using and developing Cornell Notes to help with their other classes.  These strategies will help them become prepared for the rigorous courses they are taking this year.  

12th Grade

This is a very busy month for our seniors as they work to refine their college essays, begin to apply to colleges, and start to search for scholarships. Seniors will also be mentoring our 9th graders. Seniors will start tutorials at the end of the month and continue to improve their Cornell Note taking skills and agenda usage.

Celebrations

• A few of our students completed the People Program internship this summer as a way to prepare for college and learn strategies of how to manage the college rigor.
• John Acevedo is the state champion in the 500 freestyle.  He is a 1.5 seconds off from having an Olympic qualifying time.
• Carlos Montes just set the record for most career goals for our boys’ soccer team.
• Armoni Brown was the state champion in the long jump during the 2017 Track season.

College Corner

• Last year we had 46 students accepted into a college. 91% of our AVID students planned on going to a college; others went on mission trips, and some went into the workforce to save money for college.
• Also, last year our AVID students earned more than $400,000 in scholarships. Alfonso Diaz, Marina Gonzales, Angelica Catalan of our students received the PEOPLE Program scholarship which is a full-ride (tuition) to University of Wisconsin-Madison.  TJ Garrity our AVID student earned a partial athletic and partial academic scholarship to play at Northwest Missouri State.   We are proud of all of our students and their achievements, and we look forward to hearing about their first semester.
